The
Natural Style of
the
Twilight Residence
|
The goal of this
design was to create an extraordinary environment around an
extremely
ordinary house. The fluid movement of the design contains an
intentionally random plant distribution.
|
This
slide shows a front view of the property before the
design process started. The primary design concern in
the front was the harsh square horizontallity of the
property and the out-dated entry porch. |
 |
 |
The
front porch was extended and curved to make it
more functional and attractive. The out-dated columns
were replaced with some that were more in theme with
the front door. |
|
The
curvilinear flow of the
hardscape establishes a
new aesthetic foundation that
consumes the traditional old
box, and supports an eclectic
variety of plant textures,
colors and forms. |
|
 |
The
random appearance of the plantings were methodically thought out.
The central Crape Myrtle, for example, is a
unique single accent surrounded by perennials and
annual color to develop this as a focal point to the landscape.
The tree also serves an important role in breaking through
the horizontal plane of the roof line. |
|
This
before slide shows some of the challenges
of the site: bad off site views, a neighbors
garage, surrounding a flat static square space. |
|
 |
Different
elevations create interest and separate each unique space. The customer
needed areas for; traffic flow, gathering and sitting, cooking/grilling
and private sitting adjacent to the master bedroom. |
|
| The
exit from master bedroom of this pier and beam home was considerably
higher than the level of the yard. This provided a good site for a private
master terrace that overlooks the fountain and lower areas. |
 |
|
The
fountain creates a central climax for the yard and helps separate the
master terrace
from the gathering area. The separation is assisted by a group of 3
Mexican stone
pots that also help transition the fountain into the design. |
|
 |
|
|
Because
of limited space, each element of the design had
to be considered with great economy. The capped edge
of the fountain pool and the wall surrounding the main
patio function both to create elevations and
provide a seating area. |
 |
 |
The
customer wanted a cooking area that would
blend into the design and not disrupt the large
groups they entertained. |
|
This
side yard view
exemplifies the aesthetic
of this design. Random
natural plant arrangements with diverse heights,
colors and textures set
against the positive space
of the turf and anchored
by the flowing hardscape. |
 |
|
|
This
reflective view looking back through the newly
planted garden has a feeling of establishment. The
customer requested that materials be arranged
closely for an immediate feeling of fullness. |
|
| The
white fencing successfully separates this yard from the old neighborhood
and provides a back drop for a private oasis. |
 |
|
|
| The
goal of this design was to create an extraordinary environment around an
extremely ordinary house. This curvilinear design creates an organic
flow that relieves the architectonic tension of an over linear urban
environment. |
